Kenya National Bureau of Statistics has released Consumer Price Indices (CPI) and rates of inflation for April 2013 generated using data collected during the second and third weeks of the month under review. The prices were obtained from selected retail outlets in 25 data collection zones located in 13 urban centers.
The CPI increased by 0.95% from 137.96 in March 2013 to 139.28 in April 2013. The overall inflation rate stood at 4.14% in April 2013.
Between March and April 2013, Food and Non Alcoholic drinks’ Index increased by 1.85%. Moreover, compared to the same month in 2012, the Index recorded increases of 3.57%. The food and non-alcoholic drinks’ Index rose mainly due to increase in food items such as tomatoes, beef, potatoes and sugar.
Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other fuels’ index went up by 0.31% between March and April 2013 mainly due to observed modest increases in costs of house rents and cooking fuels like charcoal.
The Transport Index increased by 0.20 % mainly on account of high taxi charges; bus/matatu fares which were observed despite lower costs of diesel.
