Update on EAC EU EPA

  • The existing document as endorsed by all the EAC Member States following the Arusha meeting on the 10th September will be discussed during ¬†EAC Council of Ministers of Trade by the end of the week for amendments
  • Once consensus by both parties is attained, a senior officials meeting will be convened to formerly initial the agreement.
  • Initialing will pave way for Kenya to enter the market access regulation (MAR) pending final signatures and ratification.
  • In the meantime an amendment to include Kenya in the GSP has already been through the European Council and is now in Parliament for ratification. Rejection is not anticipated under the circumstances
  • Kenya will continue trade under GSP, until the MAR is granted; a process that should take between 2 and 6 months
  • It is still unclear how mixed bouquets will be considered under the varying HS codes
  • In preparation for 1st October, KFC is pursuing KRA to ensure adequate and timely supplies of GSP forms.
