The Kenya Revenue Authority Tax Sensitization workshop

The KFC’s 12th Annual General Meeting is scheduled to be held on 22nd October 2010 at Serena Hotel.  The Kenya Revenue Authority will hold a Tax Sensitization workshop for members of the Kenya Flower Council before the start of the AGM. They will hold the interactive session from 8.00 to 9.45 am.

Issues to be discussed include:

Ø    VAT

Ø    Exemptions

Ø    Standards Levy

Ø    With Holding Tax

Ø    Income Tax

Ø    Documentation and Procedures among others.

The Certification Committee

The Certification Committee comprise of a nominees from National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), flowers and ornamentals marketing body (FloraHolland), Kenya Bureau of Standards, (KEBS), the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Labour, Kenya plantation and Agricultural workers Union (KPAWU), an NGO representative with expert information on social audits (AfricaNow), an accredited Certification Body (BVKL), C.E.O Kenya Flower Council and two directors from Kenya Flower Council.

The Certification Committee meets at least once every three months to review certification reports by the Kenya Flower Council and approve the award of certificate where members have met compliance requirements.

Technical Committee

The committee interprets and approves clauses of the KFC code of practice with regard to technical matters and organizes technical meetings to address issues relating to flower production in Kenya. They also generate and review standards on tolerance levels with regard to agrochemical usage within the industry.

The committee members comprise of five persons from the following disciplines

A.      Technical expertise in flower production with three year experience.

B.      Human resource management with at least two years experience in a flower farm with at least 200 employees.

C.      Health, safety and environment conservation expertise with at least two years experience in a flower farm with at least 200 employees.

D.      Post-harvest management and marketing expertise with at least two years experience in a flower farm with at least 200 employees.

The KFC code of practice

Currently in its 8th edition, the code ensures that members foster responsible and safe production of cut flowers and related products with due regard to the interests of the community and environment, while embracing the principles of Corporate Social Responsibility as defined in the KFC constitution. The code of practice also promotes a safe working environment for all farm staff whilst ensuring that their welfare is catered for in accordance with the Laws of Kenya: Good Agricultural Practice, training, hygiene, health and safety, maintenance of farm equipment and machinery requirements.

The KFC Code of Practice meets international requirements and has been benchmarked to: GlobalGap, Tescos Nature and FFP. KFC is also seeking mutual recognition and/or benchmarking of the Code with MPS, Fair Trade and Rainforest.

KFC was also given mandate by Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) to implement the KEBS KS-1758.

From the above, one KFC Silver audit will confer certification to all afore mentioned schemes hence saving precious time and resources for the growers. The Council Certification scheme operates on two levels: Silver and Gold Certification Standards.

The secretariat

The secretariat is in charge of lobbying, industry promotions locally and internationally, networking and publicity, development and implementation of Code of Practice.

Associate Members and stakeholders

KFC has attracted 49 associate members from farm inputs companies, financial service providers, buyers, agrochemical companies, florists and other affiliated service providers. They enjoy the opportunity to affiliate with a well organized group of flower growers and exporters of flowers who have demonstrable commitment to due diligence in conducting their businesses. KFC provides local and international platforms for information sharing with Growers from time to time through exhibitions, formal and informal meetings, where Associate Members get an opportunity to showcase their products and services to industry stakeholders.

Other stakeholders include the Government and Non- Governmental Organizations (NGOs).

Update on the Kenya Youth Empowerment Project (KYEP) and the Call for Expressions of Interest from Employers

The Kenya Youth Empowerment Project (KYEP) was officially launched on 1 July 2010, with all the conditions for effectiveness being met earlier this week. The KYEP, which is coordinated by the Office of the Prime Minister, comprises three components: with Component 1 being an enhancement of the Kazi Kwa Vijana programme and Component 3 focusing on capacity building within the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MOYAS).

The Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) will implement Component 2, providing internships and training for 10,800 youth (aged between 15 and 29), with the planned duration of the internship being between 4 and 6 months.

The youth will receive a stipend of Kshs 6,000 per month; with the employers receiving a monthly reimbursement of Kshs 3,000 for each intern they take.

The interns will undergo a life skills training before being deployed to the various employers for internship.  This training is set to take place in January 2011.

KFC would like to encourage producer members and associate members to subscribe to this program in view of supporting government initiative for vision 2030.
